Michael R. Koop, M.D. is a Board Certified General Ophthalmologist providing exceptional medical and surgical eye care to patients throughout the Houston/Galveston and Brazoria County areas. Dr. Koop utilizes the latest techniques and technologies in his practice ranging from no stitch cataract surgery (including the ReSTOR and Toric lenses) to glaucoma, pterygium and anterior segment procedures. Additionally, Dr. Koop has extensive experience in treating glaucoma, diabetes and a variety of other medical problems of the eye. Through his on-going participation in research, educational courses and other enhanced medical training programs, Dr. Koop continues to be a leader in providing cutting edge medical care to his patients.
Before joining Texas Eye Institute in July 2000, Dr. Koop completed his medical residency in Chicago at the Cook County Hospital and received his medical degree in 1996 from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Prior to entering the medical field, Dr. Koop worked for 5 years in the field of electrical engineering with Texas Instruments in Dallas after receiving a Bachelors Degree in the same field from Purdue University.
In addition to his educational accomplishments, Dr. Koop is an active participant in the Houston and Texas medical communities as a current member of the Texas Medical Association, Houston Ophthalmologic Society and American Academy of Ophthalmology as well as a past chairman of Memorial Herman Hospital Southwest's Department of Ophthalmology (2006 - 2007).
In addition to his office practice, Dr. Koop has priviledges at Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest, Southeast and Sugar Land, Angleton Danbury Medical Center, Methodist Hospital Sugar Land and Sugar Land Surgical Center.
