Glaucoma has been called the "sneak thief of sight". Glaucoma may have no symptoms, but can cause blindness. It usually begins when pressure builds up and damages the optic nerve. Risk factors include age, family history, African American heritage, previous eye injuries/surgeries and health concerns like diabetes or high blood pressure.
If you are over the age of 40 or have a blood relative with glaucoma, you should have your eyes checked for glaucoma. When promptly diagnosed, eye pressure can be brought under control and future glaucoma vision loss can usually be minimized or prevented.
Remember loss of vision is largely preventable. At the Texas Eye Institute we want to help you maintain your vision.
